With reference to the awards conferred as announced in the London Gazette dated 26th November 1917, the following are the statements of service for which the decorations were conferred:

Temporary Captain Lewis Charles Reginald Smith, Royal West Kent Regiment.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a raiding party. On completion of the task he personally superintended the withdrawal, which was carried out in good order. He showed considerable powers of leadership.
