Hart’s Annual Army List 1908 – Colonel Edmund Leach,
C.B.; 3rd November 1854, Ensign; 9th February 1855, Lieutenant; 12th April 1864,
Captain; 21st August 1866, Major; 2nd February 1876, Lieutenant-Colonel;
5th March 1885, Colonel; 8th August 1894, Major General; 3rd April 1904,
Colonel, West Kent Regiment.
Major General E Leach served in the 50th Regiment in the Crimea, subsequent
to the fall of Sebastopol, from the 19th September 1855 until the evacuation on
12th July 1856. Served also in the New Zealand war of 1863-66 as Orderly Officer
to Colonel Waddy when commanding a Field Force in the Waikato in 1864;
present at Waiari; appointed Aide de Camp to Brigadier General Waddy 7th January
1865; and present at the attack and repulse of the enemy at Nukumaru (mentioned
in despatches); appointed Deputy Assistant Adjutant General 26th January 1865,
and present at the repulse of the enemy at Kakaramea (mentioned) and served
throughout the campaign in the Wanganni district under Sir D. Cameron.
Accompanied Major General Chute as D.A. Adjutant General during his campaign on
the West Coast in 1865-66, and present at the assault and capture of Okatuku,
Putahi, Otapawa, Ketemari and Waikoko Pah (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of
Major and Medal). Served with the 1st Battaliin West Kent Regiment throughout
the Egyptian war of 1882, and was present at the action of Kassasin on the 9th
of September )Medal, 4th Class of the Osmanieh and Khedive's Star). Served in
the Nike Expedition in 1884-85 in command of the 1st Battalion of the West Kent
Regiment (mentioned in despatches, CB., and Clasp).
