Hart’s Annual Army List 1908 –  6th May 1885, Lieutenant; 16th May 1896, Captain; 19th August 1905, Major.

Major Venables served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98 with the Malakand Field Force with the 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment during the operations in the Mamund Valley including the engagements at Agrah and Gut and Badadai; also served with the Buner Field Force with the 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, during the operations in Buner and Chamia including the engagement at Tanga Pass (Medal with Clasp).

Major Edward F. Venables, Reserve of Officers, to command the Battalion, and to be temporary Lieutenant-Colonel, vice Brevet Colonel G. E. Even, C.B., retired, Indian Army, who relinquishes command at his own request. Dated 22nd February, 1915.
