Major Martyn served in the South African war with the 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, 14th April to May 1900; in Orange River Colony, May to November 1900, including the actions at Bidduplhsberg and Wittenbergen; also operations in Cape Colony south of Orange River 1900. Performed the duties of Acting Intelligence Officer at Harrismith from 10th September 1900 (mentioned in despatches).
