He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire & Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire.
Hart’s Annual Army List 1908 – 11th May 1878, 2nd Lieutenant; 17th August 1880, Lieutenant; 2nd May 1885, Captain; 10th March 1894, Major; 21st March 1904, Lieutenant-Colonel; 21st March 1907, Brevet-Colonel.
Served in the Boer War of 1881 with the Natal Field Force; served with the 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment throughout the Egyptian War of 1882, and was present at the action at Kassasin (9th September) and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in command of the escort to the ammunition column (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Soudan Frontier Field Force in 1885-1886 in command of the English Camel Corps, and was present in the engagement at Giniss. Served in the South African war with the 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, 14th April to May 1900; in Orange River Colony, May to November 1900, including the actions at Bidduplhsberg and Wittenbergen; also operations in Cape Colony south of Orange River 1900. Commanded the battalion from 21st April 1900 to 31st May 1902 and took part in the operations in the Transvaal, June to September 1900; and in Orange River Colony, 30th November 1900 to June 1901 and September 1801 to 31st May 1902 (mentioned in despatches, Medal with three Clasps, King's Medal with two Clasps).
Held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for
London; fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in
despatches four times; invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St.
George (C.M.G.) in 1917.
