Brevet Colonel Richard John Woulfe-Flanagan, 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment.


Hart’s Annual Army List 1908 – 26th June 1889, 2nd Lieutenant; 23rd December 1892,  Lieutenant; 23rd January 1899, Captain.

Captains, Moody, Woulfe-Flanagan, Joslin, Lister, Tulloch and Elgood served in the South African war with the 2nd Battalion,  Royal West Kent Regiment, and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, 14th April to May 1900; in Orange River Colony, May to 29th November 1900, including the actions at Biddulphsberg and Wittebergen; also operations in Cape Colony south of Orange River 1900.

The following formed part of the Russian Decorations awarded in July, 1916, to the British Forces for distinguished services rendered during the course of the campaign: 

His Majesty the King has given unrestricted permission in all cases to wear the Decorations and medals in question.

The Secretary of State for War has received the following despatch addressed to the Chief of the General Staff, India, by Lieut. -General W R Marshall, K.C.B., KCSI., Commanding in Chief, Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force: —

General Headquarters, Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, 11th November, 1918.

Sir, — With reference to paragraph 29 of my Despatch dated 1st October, 1918, I have the honour to submit herewith a list of names of those Officers, ladies, non-commissioned Officers and men serving, or who have served, under my command, whose distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty I consider deserving of special mention.

His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the following awards to the under mentioned Officers, Warrant Officers, Non Commissioned Officers and Men in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field:

AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER.

Lieutenant-Colonel Richard John Woulfe-Flanagan, 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, (MESOPOTAMIA)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Sharqat, 28th October, 1918. Throughout the action he commanded his battalion with great judgment, quickly selecting the salient points of attack. Although his numbers were considerably reduced, he, by making use of some machine gunners and a company of another regiment, eventually gained a complete sweep over the enemy, capturing: 180 prisoners and nine machine guns. He did fine work.
