Promoted Lance Corporal 9th September 1914, promoted Corporal 31st October 1914, appointed Lance Sergeant 18th May 1915, promoted Sergeant 25th May 1915, promoted CSM 9th September 1916, demobilized 25th March 1919 to 159 Upper Stone Street, Maidstone, Kent.

Wounded 21st October 1915, with gun shot wound to hand & wounded (gas)16th August 1918.
Disability (20%) pension of 4/6 a week with an allowance of 3/2 per week for three children, plus 6d a day for Distinguished Conduct Medal.

For conspicuous gallantry when acting with an officers patrol. Serjeant Coomber never ceased to encourage and help the men, with total disregard to this own safety and his assistance to the officer was invaluable.
