Serjeant John Charles SAWARD, L/7632, 1st Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, 18th April 1915.

Born Swanscombe, Gravesend, Kent, son of **John & *Mary Jane Saward. * died 17th September 1898, Canning Town, West Ham. ** died 14th February 1907, Werst Ham, Leyton, Essex.

26th July 1910, All Saints & St Peter,  Maldon, Essex, married Emma Mary Marshall.


1911 Census - 15 Commercial Road, Eastbourne, Sussex - John Charles Saward, head, age 25, married, local Superintendent of Industrial Assurance Company, worker, born Swanscombe, Kent; Emma Mary Saward, wife, age 26, married under one year, no children, born Stratford, Essex.


Children - Doris Marshall Saward, born 24th April 1913,  Eastbourne, Sussex.

Enlisted Gravesend, Kent.  Resided Eastbourne, Sussex.

15th August 1914, posted BEF.

Commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 45 and 47, Belgium. / Swanscombe Memorial / Eastbourne Roll of Honour
