Serjeant Edwin George HOWDEN, G/11607, 2nd  Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of chronic enteritis, whilst a Prisoner of War, at Angora, Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force, 7th January 1917.

1st July 1901, London, enlisted Royal Field Artillery, Service No.G/17647, age 18 years, height 5ft 9½ inches, weight 130lbs, pale complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, scar left thigh. Formerly Telegraph Messenger.

3rd July 1901, joined At Woolwich; 4th July 1901, posted Depot, Royal Horse Artillery; 30th July 1906, 3rd Class Certificate of Education; 31st October 1909, Lucknow, India, transferred to Reserve; 30th June 1913, discharged after 1st period. Served 3 years & 242 days.


16th November 1909, Lucknow, India, married Coral Mabel Mispeflaar, spinster.

India & Mesopotamia, 12th March 1915 to 7th January 1917.

Enlisted Jhansi, India, age 30 years & 5 days, height 5ft 11 inches, weight 118lbs, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, scar right wrist & left thigh.  Resided 1 Bungalow, Rangs? Hill, Jhansi, India. Formerly accountant.

Note - "Have resided out of my Fathers house for over 3 years but not in same place have occupied a bungalow of yearly value of £10 but have not paid rates on same."

12th March 1915, enlisted & posted as Sergeant to Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment, India, attached Supply & Transport Corps; 29th April 1916, Kut-al-Amara, taken Prisoner of War.

20th August 1917, war Office Memo to Infantry Records - "The Officer in Charge of Infantry Records Hounslow is informed that the report on a list received through the Ottoman Red Crescent No.Y46421 of the death of No.11607 Sjt E G Howden, 2nd R West Kent Regt attached Sup. and Trans. at Angora of chronic enteritis, has been accepted as sufficient evidence for official purposes, and that the date of death has assumed to be the 7th January 1917. The next of kin should be notified accordingly and the usual papers prepared, if not already done."

7th March 1918, pension of 28/9 a week awarded to widow & three children, increasing to 32/1 a week from 1st May 1918. Payable by The Controller of Military Accounts, 5th Division, India.

10th March 1921, medals to be sent to Mrs E G Howden, Bungalow 62, Cantonment Road, Jhansi, India.

Buried at Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Angora Mem. 89., Iraq.
