Serjeant E C VANNER, 19121, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment.

AWARDS: DCM

London Gazette 1st May 1918.

His Majesty The KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to the under mentioned Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers, and Men, for gallantry and distinguished service in the Field:

Serjeant E C VANNER, 19121,  Royal West Kent Regiment. (Lewisham).

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a raid he took command of the left attacking party after his officer had become a casualty, and though considerably outnumbered he attacked the enemy with all the available bombs. Having then organised an orderly withdrawal, he stayed behind with another serjeant and attempted to bring back his officer; but, being attacked by a number of the enemy, and his comrade being wounded, they were forced to return to our trenches. He acted with courage and coolness throughout the operation.
