27th April 1917, letter from Miss Rosina Waterman, 1 Yew Tree Cottages, Church End, Ballards Lane, Finchley, London, N. - " I am writing to ask you if you can give me any information of Pte W J Holgate he as been missing since the 18 of November. I have wrote everywhere and no-ne answered. You know I am not married to him but I have live with him just over 4 years now and I have one son and expect another. I would be much obliged if you will do anything for me as it is a very anxious time. When writing would you kindly address it Mrs Holgate as no-ne knows we were not married and I want to keep it secret now as people will talk this was his address Pte W J Holgate, 15 Platoon, "D" Company, 7th Battalion, R W Kents, BEF France. An early reply would oblige."
