Private Thomas Frederick PEMBROKE, L/1189, 1st  Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, (formerly T/34045, R.A.S.C.), killed in action, Flanders France, 3rd September 1916.

22nd April 1895, born Deptford, Kent, son of John Edward Frederick & Emma Pembroke, 70 Church Street, Deptford /  88 Speedwell Street, Deptford.

Brother - Private John Pembroke, 8688, 1st Leinster Regiment, India.

17th February 1913 to 28th June 1914, served in 3rd Battalion, (Special Reserve), Royal West Kent Regiment, No.8693, enlisted  New Cross, age 17 years & 10 months, height 5ft 3 inches, weight 106lbs, blue eyes, auburn hair, scar between shoulders, three small scars right side of abdomen, two small scars back of left hand. Formerly hawker. 21st February 1913, Maidstone, Kent; 28th July 1913 to 23rd August 1913, Shorncliffe.


Home 29th June 1914 to 19th September 1914; BEF 20th September 1914 to 3rd September 1916.

29th June 1914, transferred to Royal Army Service Corps, 34045, driver, horse transport. 3rd July 1914, Woolwich, Kent. Age 18 years & 316 days, height 5ft 4¾ inches, weight 114lbs, fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark auburn hair, girls bust back of right forearm, scar inside right shoulder blade.

14th August 1914, Woolwich, absent from Tattoo till 12.15pm on 15th, 7 days confined to Barracks, forfeits 2 days pay; 20th September 1914, posted BEF, & embarked; 24th September 1914, disembarked; 22nd December 1914, Hinges, disobedience of Battalion orders in driving his horse out of a walk, 5 days Field Punishment No.1.; 18th January 1916, to England; 5th February 1916, Park Royal, absent without leave from 9.30pm 5th February 1916, to 6am, 6th February 1916, forfeits 2 days pay.


Transferred to Royal West Kent 22nd January 1916; 2nd May 1916, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 5th May 1916, posted to 9th Battalion. Age 20 years & 210 days, height 5ft 6 inches.

23rd July 1916, embarked; 25th July 1916, Etaples, 40 Infantry Base Depot; 3rd August 1916, joined Battalion "B" Company, In the Field; 3rd September 1916, posted missing.

6th June 1918, War Office memo - The Director of Graves Registration and Enquiries reports that the above named soldiers grave has been located. Will you please inform the next of kin accordingly, expressing the regret of The Army Council that it must be definitely accepted that the soldier was killed.

13th June 1919, Statement of Relatives - Father, deceased J F Pembroke; Mother, Mrs E Pembroke; Brothers - J F Pembroke, age 29, 20A Fingal Street, Greenwich; Sisters - E Pembroke, age 35, address not known; Sarah Pembroke, age 25, 49 Horton Street, Deptford.

Buried at Delville Wood Cemetery, XXIII. J. 4., Longueval, France.
