17th September 1937, letter from Mrs Carroll, 49 Fairfield Crescent, Kingsbury, NW9 - "I hope this letter will not be putting you to too much trouble. I really want to know, if you can tell me when my husband Private Thomas Carroll, 11383, 12th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, he died in March 28th 1916 in Northampton, it does not say from what he died of. You see I had been married in 19102 and in 1914 I left him to go into service, he and his whole family used to drink so much that there was only that to do, he was a good man really and was a Tram Conductor at the New Cross Depot and had worked 17 years for the LCC, and whilst I was in service during the war I heard he had died but only his people were notified of course, it is quite natural I suppose although they knew I had been good to him, I had no claim on him for any money which I know I would not be entitled to, but I tried hard to find him, so I would like to know if he served overseas and how long he had been in the Army. I worked awfully hard on a tram at Clapham Depot for nearly 3 years and after that I've sold poppy & other flag days to help sales I am a member of the Womens Section of the British Legion it may seem strange after all these years but some how I feel I would like to know if possible a little of what he died from. I can give you the number of his death certificate which I received from the Record Office, War Office, No. E/175309/1 accts 4 Effects Form 100, dated at the War Office, London 18th April 1916. If by chance this can help you he was living at the time at Brayards Road, Peckham, SE."

27th September 1937, War Office, Records - "With reference to you letter of 17th September , I am directed to inform you that the Department has a record of a No.G/11383 Private Thomas Carroll, Royal West Kent Regiment, who died of pneumonia on 28th March 1916 at the Military Hospital, Northampton.
