Private Sidney Charles HAMMOND, G/5001, "D" Company, 1st   Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, Passchendale, Flanders France, 4th October 1917, age 37.  

24th June 1881, born Folkestone, Kent, son of John Rouse Hammond, (Captain Cross Channel Boats), & Mary Ann Hammond, (daughter of Stephen Standing), of 4, Richmond St., Folkestone, Kent.

Educated St Mary's Higher Grade School, Folkestone, Kent.


1911 Census - Prince of Wales Pier, Dover, Kent - Sydney Hammond, age 31, single, steward, steam packet, Railway Company, worker, born Folkestone, Kent.


Enlisted October 1914, Bromley, Kent, age 33 years & 6 months, height 5ft 5½ inches, weight 130lbs. Formerly labourer.

22nd April 1915, posted BEF.

His Commanding Officer wrote: "We shall all miss him; it is a great loss to us. He was invariably cheerful under all circumstances and was extremely reliable. He has done some excellent work especially of late, which would certainly have received some recognition had he lived. I was quite near him when he was killed. He was shot through the heart and died almost at once."
