Private Stuart (Stewart), Anthony HALE, G/26424, 7th Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of wounds, Flanders France, 13th October 1917, age 19.

3rd July 1898, born Westfield, Sussex, son of Charles, (coachman),  and Annie Hale, of Battle Hill, Battle, Sussex.

Educated at Battle & Langton Nation School.


1911 Census - Railway Hotel Cottage, Battle Hill, Battle, Sussex - Charles Hale, head, age 49, married, hotel coachman, worker, born Horningsham, Wiltshire; Annie Hale, wife, age 30, married 13 years, 3 children, all still alive, born Sedlescombe, Sussex; Stuart Hale, son, age 12, school, born Westfield, Sussex; Gracie Hale, daughter, age 11, school, born Battle, Sussex; Dennis Hale, son, age 4, born Battle, Sussex.


2nd April 1917, enlisted; 15th August 1917, posted BEF; 12th October 1917, Poelcappelle, wounded; 13th October 1917, 61 Casualty Clearing Station.

His Commanding Officer wrote "He was an excellent soldier, and did his duty and best to please everyone".

Buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, IX. F. 10., Belgium.
