Born Northaw, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, son of Jesse and Catherine Mitchell, of 14, Clarens Street, Perry Hill, Catford, London.

Enlisted Woolwich, Kent, age 34 years & 150 days, height 5ft 6¾ inches, weight 133lbs, ruddy complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, birth mark right thigh.  Resided Catford, SE. Formerly farm labourer.

Home, 31st August 1914 to 31st May 1915; BEF, 1st June 1915 to 8th October 1915.

31st August 1914, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 4th September 1914, posted 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st June 1915, posted BEF & embarked; 8th October 1915, posted missing.


21st November 1916, letter from War Office to Mr J Mitchell, of 14, Clarens Street, Perry Hill, Catford, SE -

"With reference to the Estate of the late Pte J Ward, 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, The Secretary of State of the War Office requests that you will be good enough to return this letter as early as possible, to the above address, together with a full personal description of the late soldier showing his height complexion, colour of his hair & eyes, and mentioning any distinctive marks he may have upon his body. If you have any letters in which he mentioned his real and assumed names, they should be forwarded to this office, you should also state his reason for enlisting in the name of Ward."

Answer - "height 5ft 7½ as near as I know. Complexion fair, Dark hair. Eyes brown. Slight birthmark on left wrist I think. I have no other letters from him than one I have already forwarded. I do not know his reason for enlisting in the name of Ward. Yours truly, Jesse Mitchell"
