Private Joseph William CARTER. S/6372, 1st Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment,  died, 23rd December 1919, age 35.

Son of Joseph and Mary Ann Carter, of 1, Conn St., Creek Road, Deptford, London.

4th October 1906, enlisted; 12th July 1909 to 31st July 1909, Shorncliffe; 5th September 1910 to 24th September 1910, Cowshot; 24th July 1911 to 19th August 1911, Shorncliffe; 20th May 1912 to 15th June 1912, Shorncliffe; 30th May 1912, Shorncliffe, examined and found fit for re-engagement; 28th July 1913 to 23rd August 1913, Shorncliffe; 27th October 1914, landed 5 Infantry Base Depot; 26th November 1914, joined Battalion, "D" Company; 18th April 1915, wounded; 6th August 1915, with Battalion; 28th August 1915, 15 Field Ambulance, NYD fever; 28th August 1915, to 5 Div Rest Station; 7th September 1915, rejoined Battalion, "D" Company; 22nd July 1916, 1 Stationary Hospital, wounded, gun shot wound head; 28th July 1916, 40 Infantry Base Depot; 15th August 1916, joined Battalion, "D" Company; 30th August 1916, wounded, shell wound left hand to Casualty Clearing Station; 10th September 1916, 40 Infantry Base Depot; 16th October 1916, posted 11th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment & joined them in the Field; 24th May 1917, 10 days leave to UK; 15th November 1917, Military Hospital, jaundice; 3rd December 1917, 8 General Hospital, Rouen, jaundice, obstructive, to England; 9th December 1917 to 16th March 1918, 3rd Western General Hospital, jaundice; 24th May 1918, Eastern Command Depot, jaundice, has had remedial exercises & army physical drill whist at this Depot; 30th May 1918, admitted to Military Hospital Eastern Command Depot, Shoreham; 31st May 1918, struck off strength of ECD; 1st June 1918, taken on strength of Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 6th June 1918 to 2nd September 1918, 2nd Eastern General Hospital; 4th September 1918, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 21st October 1918, attached to Eastern Command Transfer Centre; 19th November 1918, transferred to Eastern Command Labour Centre; 29th November 1918, posted 363 Reserve Employment Company, "A" Company, Eastern Command Labour Centre, Service No. 679608,; 14th December 1918, Casrshalton, absenting himself without leave from 21.30 until 21.30 27th December 1918, 10 days confined to Barracks, deprived of 5 days pay, forfeits 13 days pay; 4th January 1919, posted 399 Labour Company; 22nd February 1919, Crystal Palace, not complying with an order, insolence to an NCO whilst a defaulter, 168 hours detention.

20th October 1919, Medical Report - Catarrhal jaundice, origin October 1917, France; 8th December 1917, 8 General Hospital; 9th December 1917, 3rd Western General Hospital, operation, no gall stones discovered, no stenosis; pain in upper part of abdomen, pains are quite local, and painful area can be covered by a 5/- piece, states he was jaundiced last week, constipation frequent, not attributable to service, but aggravated by it.

5th April 1919, discharged & transferred to Class 2, Reserve, internal trouble, disability 20%, conditional pension, 5/6 a week for 26 weeks, pension expires 7th October 1919; 26th September 1919, interim pension, increase current award to 8/- from 3rd September 1919 & continue for a further 9 weeks from 8th October 1919, pension expires 9th December 1919; 3rd November 1919, 12/- a week for 52 weeks from 10th December 1919, pension expires 7th December 1920; 23rd December 1919, pensioner died; 30th January 1920, to have 12/- to end of quarter in which pensioner died, then pension to cease.

Commemorated at  Deptford (Brockley) Cemetery, Screen Wall. D. 782A., Brockley Road, Lewisham, United Kingdom.
