Private James Henry CASTLE, G10420, 11th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of wounds, 8 Casualty Clearing Station, Flanders France, 3rd June  1916, age 18.

Born Deptford, SE, son of the late William Castle, of 3 Mitchells Cottages, Payne St., Deptford, London.

Enlisted Deptford, SE, age 19 years & 166 days, height 5ft 6 inches, 112lbs.  Resided 3 Payne St, Deptford SE. Formerly carman.

26th October 1915, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 7th January 1916, Aldershot, quitting the ranks whilst on the line of march, 7 days Field Punishment No.2.; 26th March 1916, Aldershot, overstaying his leave from 11.59 pm till reporting himself at 1.30 pm 27th March 1916, 7 days confined to Barracks, forfeits one days pay; 3rd May 1916, posted BEF & 11th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st June 1916, wounded in the Field, gun shot wounds both legs.

21st October 1919, Statement of Relatives - Brother, Cornelius Castle, age 28, serving abroad; Sidney? Castle, age 26, PO.3 Twitchells Cottage, Payne Street, Deptford, SE8.; Sisters - Mrs A Sullivan, age 38, 30 Czar Street, Deptford, SE; Mrs Jane M Brownes, age 35, 35 Dacca Street, Deptford, SE8; Mrs Mary Mundy, age 29, 44 Douglas Street, Deptford.

June 1920, Memorial Scroll, sent to Mr Castle, 3 Twitchells Cotts, Payne Street, Deptford, SE8.

29th October 1921, letter from Mr C Castle, 151 Church Street, Deptford, SE. - Sir, with reference to General Service and Victory Medals sent to Mrs A Sullivan, 30 Czar Street, Deptford, SE, the property of my younger brother Pte James Castle, 10420, 11st Battalion, R.W.Kents. Sir I wish to inform you their is no Mother or Father living and I am the eldest brother which makes me next of kin kindly correct mistake  and forward same onto C Castle, No. 151 Church Street, Deptford, SE8. Late Rifn C Castle, 211286, 24th Batt, The Rifle Brigade hoping you will take careful consideration over this letter and in future any correspondence with reference to same kindly refer to C Castle, 151 Church Street, Deptford, SE8. Sir I received the Memorial Scroll sent in respect of him and I think I am entitled to his medals.

1st November 1921, Infantry Records letter to Mr C Castle, 151 Church Street, Deptford, SE. - with reference your letter dated 29th October 1921. I am directed to inform you that under instructions from the War Office, all decorations awarded to the late soldier above named are the property of Mrs A Sullivan, 30 Czar Street, Deptford, SE.

Buried at  Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, II B. 135., Nord, France.
