Enlisted Camberwell, age 19, height 5ft 3 inches, weight 119lbs, clasped hands left forearm, scroll of flowers right forearm. Resided 17, Knotts Terrace, Tanners Hill, Deptford SE. Son of Sarah Penfold, 17, Knotts Terrace, Tanners Hill, Deptford SE. Formerly hawker.

10th September 1915, enlisted & posted Driver, "D" / 186th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, Service No.41666; 11th September 1915, joined at Blackheath; 16th September 1915, found to have fraudulently enlisted as above whilst serving as No.G/6361 Pte John Edward Penfold in the 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 16th September 1915, In arrest; 22nd September 1915, Deptford, improper reply to an NCO, 48 hours imprisonment with hard labour; 23rd September 1915, Trial dispensed with and held to be relegated to former Corps, Authority General Officer Commanding London District, dated  forfeit all former service on dispensation of trial; 25th September 1915, service reckons from this date when handed over to Escort from 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment.


Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, Pier & Face 11C, France.

NOTE: Regimental History & Soldiers Died in the Great War both show Service No. as G/6361; CWGC web site shows it as G/8361.
