Private John BUTLER, L/9658, 2nd Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died whilst Prisoner of War, Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force, 28th October 1916, age 23.
Born Erith, Kent, son of William Harwood Butler & Emma Coleman (formerly Butler), of 13 Castle Terrace, Slade Green / 101, Hazel Road, Slade Green, Erith, Kent.
Enlisted Woolwich, Kent, age 18, height 5ft 3 inches, weight 120lbs, fair complexion, brown eyes, brown hair, burn scar right forearm. Formerly labourer in Acme Bottle Manufacturing Company, Victoria Wharf, Dartford, drawing bottles from the kiln.
Home 29th August 1911 to 21st October 1913; 22nd October 1913 to 31st January 1915; 1st February 1915 to 28th October 1916.
29th August 1911, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 11th December 1911, posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 3rd July 1912, Dublin, making an improper remark to L/Cpl Bamblett, 8 days confined to Barracks; 12th November 1912, Qualified in Transport Duties, Newbridge; 30th April 1913, awarded 3rd Class Certificate of Education; 2nd June 1913 to 9th June 1913, King George V Hospital, Dublin, tonsillitis; 22nd October 1913, posted 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 12th September 1914, absent from Parade, 5 days confined to Barracks; 8th May 1915, Ashway, admitted to No.19 Hospital, JCT feet; 12th May 1915, discharged from hospital; 22nd May 1915, awarded 14 days Field Punishment No.2. for When on Active Service, allowing his rifle to be taken away when on Quarter Guard; 29th April 1916, taken Prisoner of War at Kut el Amara, and interred at Angora.
24th January 1919, Certificate received from Ottoman Red Crescent, died in delirium from dysentery and malaria at Dorak Hospital, Turkey and buried in Hospital Cemetery with no marker. Effects torn trousers & coat.
Commemorated at Basra Memorial, Panel 29, Iraq.
