Private Herbert William EVANS, G/2211, 7th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of wounds, (gun shot), in War Hospital, Sains-du-Nord,  France,  6th April 1918.

Born Tunbridge Wells, Kent, son of Henry (carpenter & blind maker) & Sophia Evans, 67 Pembury Road, Tonbridge, Kent.

22nd February 1913, Tonbridge Register Office, married Ada Elizabeth Joy, 73 Nelson Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent.

Child - Herbert Walter Evans, born 26th June 1913, Tonbridge, Kent, died 1st April 1915, Tonbridge, Kent;  Francis William Evans, born 8th March 1916, 73 Nelson Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent.

Enlisted  Tunbridge Wells, Kent, age 25, height 5ft 6 inches.  Resided Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Formerly compositor.

Home 8th September 1914 to 25th July 1915; BEF 26th July 1915 to 6th April 1918.

8th September 1914, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 11th September 1914, posted 7th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 4th January 1915, overstaying his pass from 12.00 midnight till 9.30am on 4th, admonished, forfeits one days pay; 10th May 1915, overstaying his pass from 12.00 midnight until 10.30pm on 9th, admonished, forfeits one days pay.

8th December 1918, date when Separation Allowance of 19/6 a week will cease.

9th December 1918, pension of 20/5 a week awarded for widow and one child.

Commemorated on Tonbridge War Memorial - Tonbridge War Memorial - The original World War I memorial at the Junction of Pembury Road and Quarry Hill. The names were later re-inscribed in the new Memorial Garden in Bradford Street. 

From Tonbridge History - Herbert William Evans [brother of George Cecil Evans] was born in Tunbridge Wells in 1889, the son of Harry and Sophia Evans. By 1911 Herbert had left home and was working as a printer compositor in Bow. He returned to Tonbridge in 1913 to marry Ada E. Joy; he then worked for Whitefriars Press. On the 8th September 1914 he attested for service at Tonbridge as Private G/2211 7th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment. He was posted as missing in March 1918 and later reported to have died from his wounds as a prisoner at Sains du Nord on 6th April 1918. That information did not reach his wife and family until March 1919. He is buried at Sains du Nord Cemetery.
