Private George James BROWN, S/325, 1st Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, France and Flanders, 1st January 1915, age 37.

Born Tunbridge Wells, Kent, son of George Brown & Louisa Clapson (formerly Brown), of 41, Bedford Road, Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Brother of Private Henry Brown.

Enlisted Bromley, Kent.

Commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 45 & 47, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

NOTE: Regimental History & Soldiers Died in the Great War show service No as S/325 but CWGC show it as S/1325.

NOTE : Following information provided by Brett Jeffery, who is the great grandson of Private Henry Brown.

This is the older brother of Henry Brown; they were in the same RWK battalion, and killed just two weeks after Henry enlisted. George had a very colourful early army career on the NW Frontier (I have his army record - he was not a good boy)

George James Brown is also commemorated on the Southborough War Memorial, near Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The Memorial stands on Southborough Common, opposite the 'Hand and Sceptre' pub, facing the cricket green, church and rolling woodland, and was unveiled on the 13th of February, 1921.
