Private Ernest JOHNSON, G/12148,  2nd Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of disease, with Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, 25th January 1918, age 26.

Born Meopham,  Kent, son of David & Hephzibah (Elizabeth) Johnson,  Priesthood, Priest Road, Meopham, near Gravesend, Kent.

Enlisted Gravesend, Kent, age 24 years & 205 days, height 5ft 4 inches, weight 133lbs, small lipoma back of neck. Resided Priesthood, Meopham, near Gravesend, Kent. Formerly assistant nurseryman.

Home 12th December 1915 to 4th September 1916; MEF 5th September 1916 to 25th January 1918.

12th December 1915, enlisted; 13th December 1915, to Army Reserve; 10th February 1916, mobilized; 11th February 1916, posted 12th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st September 1916, transferred to 23rd Brigade; 1st September 1916, posted 99th Battalion, Training Reserve, Service No.TR/10/4047; 5th September 1916, transferred to Royal West Kent Regiment, posted 2nd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 6th September 1916, Devonport, embarked, H.T.??annganui; 2nd October 1916, Busra, disembarked; 5th November 1916, Kharmisiyah, joined Battalion; 28th January 1917, In the Field; 3rd June 1917, admitted Hospital, effects of heat; 7th June 1917, discharged from Hospital; 12th August 1917, Hospital, malaria; 17th August 1917, Baghdad, transferred to Convalescent Depot; 25th August 1917, 3rd C.C.C.; 3rd September 1917, discharged to Duty; 16th December 1917, to Field Ambulance; 19th December 1917, Baghdad, 16 Casualty Clearing Station, reported dangerously ill, pneumonia; 17th January 1918, 31 British Stationary Hospital, Baghdad, admitted; 19th January, still on dangerously ill list; 25th January 1918, 7.45am, Baghdad, in spite of every care & treatment, died of disease, pneumonia,  contracted on Active Service.

Buried at Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, XII. J. 13. Iraq  and Commemorated on Memorial plaque, Book of remembrance St. John the Baptist Church and Village Green Memorial Meopham, Kent.
