Private Ebenezer GOODWIN,  G/23156, 6th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of wounds and scarlet fever, 9th August 1917, at 25 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, Flanders France.

Born Meopham,  Kent, son of Mrs. Harriet Goodwin, of 3, Wellington Cottages, Meopham Green, Gravesend, Kent.

Enlisted Gravesend Kent, age 19 years & 271 days, height 5ft 5¼ inches, weight 130lbs.  Resided 3 Wellington Cottages, Meopham Green, Gravesend, Kent. Formerly farm labourer.

Home, 12th December 1915 to 31st December 1916; BEF, 1st January 1917 to 9th August 1917.

12th December 1915, enlisted; 13th December 1915, transferred to Army Reserve.

29th December 1915, Notice of Claim by employer, George Scudder - "I beg that this man may be transferred to a later group as I have 200 acres the majority of which is under cultivation and am now reduced to 4 employees to carry on work of farm. My other men have been attested." 3rd January 1916, Recruiting Officer, agreed to postpone to group 12.

2nd February 1916, Notice of Claim by employer, George Scudder - "I beg that this man may be transferred to a later group as I have 200 acres the majority of which is under cultivation and am now reduced to 4 employees to carry on work of farm. My other men have been attested." 24th February 1916, Recruiting Officer, not approved, only a labourer. 15th March 1916, Local Tribunal, put back 6 months.

8th September 1916, called up to report on 23rd September 1916 to the Recruiting Office, Gravesend, Kent.

21st September 1916, 3rd Application for exemption. Voluntary attested men in the Group System, form to be sent by Military Representative to Local Tribunal.  Chief Military Representative - "Not assented to. Man too young. The application is not signed and there is nothing to show whether it is made by employer or man". Appeal dismissed.

16th October 1916, joined from Army Reserve, Class "B; 18th October 1916, posted 3rd Battalion.

2nd January 1917, embarked / disembarked; 22nd March 1917, 26 Field Ambulance, P.U.O.; 7th April 1917, Trevent, to 21 A.T. ex 6 Stationary Hospital; 8th April 1917, Wimereux, 32 Stationary Hospital, pyrexia; 19th April 1917, Boulogne, 1 Convalescent Depot; 4th May 1917, Etaples, from 10 Convalescent Depot; 11th May 1917, In the Field, absent from 8.00am Parade, deprived of 7 days pay; 24th May 1917, rejoined Battalion, "B" Company; 17th July 1917, wounded in Action, gun shot wound; 19th July 1917, admitted Rouen 25 Stationary Hospital, gun shot wounds & scarlet fever;  9th August died of wounds and scarlet fever.

5th November 1917, date when Allotment of Pay of 7/4 a week, payable to mother will cease.

15th October 1919, Statement of Relatives - Mother, Harriet Goodwin, of 3, Wellington Cottages, Meopham Green, Kent; Brother - Pte A Goodwin, age 21, 32522, Norfolk Regiment, EEF Egypt; Sister - Edith Whitmore, No.4. South Street, Meopham, Kent.

Buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen,  P. II. F. 3B.  Seine-Maritime, France  and commemorated on a bronze memorial plaque in the parish church of St. John the Baptist, Meopham, & on  Meopham War Memorial on Meopham Green.
