Born 10th February 1893, Betsham, Gravesend, Kent, son of Alfred George Caller, farm labourer & Mary Ann Caller, of 6 Catherine Cottages, South Street, Shorne Ifield, nr Gravesend, Kent / East Court Cottages, Chalk, nr Gravesend, Kent.
Educated at Cobham.
1911 Census - H M Prisons, County Gaol & Convict Prison, Maidstone - Edward Caller, Inmate, age 18, single, Soldier, HM Army, born Betsham, Kent.
Enlisted Gravesend, Kent, age 21 years 204 days, height 5ft 9¼ inches, weight 144lbs. Formerly farm labourer.
1st September 1914, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 4th September 1914, posted 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment.
7th November 1914, Purfleet, memo from Lieut-Col, Commanding 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, to Medical Officer Purfleet - "I understand that 989, Pte E Caller, of the Battalion under my Command has been detained in Hospital suffering from a cut throat alleged to have been inflicted by a civilian. Will you kindly forward me A.F.B. 117 for this man with a view to my holding a Court of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances under which this man received his injury."
8th November 1914, Purfleet, memo from Medical Officer - "I beg to inform you that a medical certificate in lieu of A.F.B. 117 was forwarded to you on Wednesday last 4th inst."
10th November 1914, Purfleet, memo from Major, Commanding 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, to Medical Officer Purfleet - "As this certificate does not appear to reached this office, I would be greatly obliged if you will furnish me with a duplicate."
11th November 1914, Purfleet, memo from Medical Officer - "I regret that this certificate has not reached you. A certificate on A.F.B. 117 is forwarded herewith please."
Second Lieutenant M H Carre wrote 25th August 1915: "I am sorry to have to inform you that your son Private 989 Caller, who is in my Platoon (No.13) was yesterday wounded by a high explosive shell - not, I am glad to say seriously. Your son was on duty as sentry at the time. I am very sorry to lose so good a man as early as this."

NOTE: Regimental History & Soldiers Died in the Great War show Service No. as 989; CWGC web site shows it as 969.
