Born Ixworth, Suffolk, son of Alfred & Emily Cotterell, of The Cottage, Mill Road, Pakenham, Bury St. Edmund's, Suffolk.

Enlisted Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, age 19 years & 8 months, height 5ft 8¾ inches, weight 10st 4lbs, some scars of recent boils on back. Resided near the Bridge, Ixworth, Suffolk.

Home 26th October 1915 to 26th August 1916; BEF 27th August 1916 to 29th September 1916.

26th October 1915, enlisted & posted 3/1 Battalion, Suffolk Yeomanry, Service No.2275; 11th December 1915 to 12th March 1916, West Suffolk General Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, furunculosis (boils), back only affected, treated with antistaphy serum injections; 27th August 1916, Folkestone, embarked; 27th August 1916, Boulogne, disembarked; 28th August 1916, 15 Infantry Base Depot; 28th August 1916, posted 1/4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment; 7th September 1916, transferred to 4th Reserve Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, posted 7th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment.
