Born Strood, Kent, son of Mrs. Emma Sarah Norwood (formerly Burt), of 3, Dykes Cottages, Ham Hill, Snodland, Kent.


1911 Census - 3 May Street, Snodland, Kent - Emma Norwood, head, age 45, widow, married 19 years, 2 children, both still alive, born Rochester, Kent; Samuel Burt, son, age 25, widower?, carter, furniture remover, born Stood, Kent; Arthur Burt, son, age 23, widower?, general labourer, born Strood, Kent.


Enlisted Maidstone, Kent, age 28 years 6 days, height 5ft 11½ inches, weight 147lbs, fresh complexion, brown eyes, brown hair.  Formerly labourer.

Home 7th September 1914 to 20th November 1914.

7th September 1914, enlisted; 8th September 1914, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; posted 8th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, Service No.1397.

20th November 1914, Shoreham, discharged being medically unfit, not likely to become an efficient soldier, no upper teeth, stumps.


1st July 1915, 50th Recruiting Office, Maidstone - Re-enlistment under the conditions of the War Office letter No.27 / Gen. No. / 4406 dated 17th June 1915 - Mr A R Burt is informed that if he is desirous of re-enlisting for Service in a Garrison Unit, for the duration of the war, for Home Service only, he should take this leaflet to the nearest Recruiting Officer, who will arrange to carry out the same. Pay, Separation and Dependants Allowances will be the same as for all other soldiers, particularsof which are set forth in the leaflets which can be obtained at any Post Office. No man will be medically rejected for re-enlistment on account of minor defects, so long as the Medical Officer certifies him fit for Home Duties.

10th August 1915, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 8th November 1915, Fort Darland, overstaying his pass from Tattoo until 9.00pm 10th November 1915, deprived of 6 days pay, forfeits 9 days pay; 15th April 1916, posted BEF & 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 15th April 1916, embarked to join 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 3rd July 1916, posted missing.

Commemorated at  Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, Pier and Face 11 C.
