Private Alfred George BUTLER, G/10245, 10th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of wounds, Flanders France, 31st July 1917, age 40.

Born Icklesham, Sussex, son of Albert & Harriett Butler, of Icklesham, Winchelsea, Sussex.

7th January 1877, Icklesham, Sussex, baptism of Alfred George Butler, son of Albert & Harriett Butler.

Enlisted Penenden Heath, Maidstone, Kent, age 38 years & 10 months, height 5ft 4½ inches, weight 123 lbs. Resided Rose Cottage, Icklesham, Sussex. Formerly gentleman's servant, valet.

Home 7th October 1915 to 2nd May 1916; BEF 3rd May 1916 to 31st July 1917.

Separation allowance of 5/3 a week and allotment of pay of 3/6 a week paid to mother,  Mrs H Butler, Rose Cottage, Icklesham.

7th October 1915, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 7th October 1915, posted 10th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 3rd November 1915, appointed Acting Corporal; 3rd November 1915, promoted Corporal;  3rd November 1915, appointed unpaid Lance Sergeant; 3rd May 1916, posted BEF; 3rd May 1916, embarked Southampton; 4th May 1916, disembarked Havre; 10th November 1916, tried by FGCM, drunkeness, reduced to the ranks.

4th August 1917, Telegram to War Office - 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, France,  reports died 31st July 10245 Pte A G Butler, 10 R W Kents, shell wound, thigh right, fractured.

15th August 1919, Statement of Relatives -Father, deceased; Mother, Harriett Butler, Rose Cottage, Icklesham; Brother - Albert E Butler, age 36, 1 The Mount, Mayfield, Sussex; Sisters - Louisa Butler, age 46, 16 Eversfield Place, St Leonards on Sea; Ada H Weeks, age 38, 86 St Johns Road, Redhill, Surrey; Evelyn West, age 32, 140 Beaconsfield Road, Hastings, Sussex; Half Sister - Edith Creasey, age 52, Spring Cottages, Icklesham, Sussex.

Buried at  Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, XVI.G.10., Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen,  Belgium.
