Lieutenant Donald Yalden HAY, Royal Flying Corps, attached to 2nd/5th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, * killed in action, 11th August 1917,  age 24.

1894, born Bromley, Kent, youngest son of John Yalden Hay and Margaret Leticia Hay, of Warley, 133 Widmore Road, Bromley, Kent.

Educated New Beacon, Sevenoaks, Kent.


1911 Census - Wellington College Public School, Wellington College, Berkshire - Donald Yalden Hay, student, age 17, single, student, born Bromley, Kent.


Previously, Private, Inns of Court, Officer Training Corps, Service No.1369.

27th November 1917, Probate - Donald Yalden Hay, of Warley, Bromley, Kent, Second Lieutenant, Royal West Kent Regiment, died 11th August 1917, in France. Administration London 27th November to John Yalden Hay esquire. Effects £121 4s 2d.

Buried at Longuenesse, St Omer, Souvenir Cemetery,  IV. D. 20., France. Commemorated Bromley War Memorial & Wellington Chapel Lutyens Memorial.


* NOTE: Died with, Arthur Norbury Solly, an experienced pilot, who had been credited with 9 victories. His gravestone is shared by his observer Lieutenant Donald Yalden Hay to whom he was a great friend. Both men died when the wing on their Bristol F 2.B A7108 collapsed and caused the aircraft to crash on take-off from Saint-Omer aerodrome at 10:50am 11 August 1917.

Royal West Kent Regiment. - Second Lieutenant (temporary Lieutenant) D. Y. Hay is seconded for duty with the R.F.C. 28th February 1917.

2nd Lieutenant (temporary Lieutenant), D Y Hay, to be Lieutenant, with precedence as from 1st June 1916 and to remain seconded.  - 9th May 1917.
