His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to the under mentioned Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers and Men, for acts of gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field :
18549 L./Cpl. W. F. Chapman, Royal West Kent Regiment.
Conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took charge of a forward isolated post, where he remained for over 24 hours without rations or communication from his company. Afterwards he constructed and held a bombing block in a communication trench, showing the greatest gallantry in assisting his officer to repel a hostile bombing attack. His conduct throughout was of the highest possible order of courage and devotion to duty.

His Majesty The KING has been graciously pleased to award a Bar to the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Conduct Medal respectively, to the under mentioned Warrant Officers, Non-commissioned Officers, and Men.
The acts of gallantry for which the decorations have been conferred-will be published in The London Gazette next month if practicable:

With reference to the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal conferred as announced in the London Gazette dated 22nd October, 1917; the following are the statements of service for which the decoration was conferred:
BAR TO DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL.
18549 L./Cpl. W F CHAPMAN (Lenham)
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward alone and captured five of the enemy who were holding out in a dug-out, and later, when in an advanced bombing post, he was of the greatest assistance to his officer. Although his comrades were up to their waists in mud and water he made light of the conditions and by his cheerfulness encouraged the men to hold on until relieved.
