Lance Corporal Frank CLARKE, L/6518, 1st  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, Flanders France, 13th September 1914, age 30.

1883 December quarter, born Deptford, SE, (Greenwich Registration District).

9th June 1902, enlisted Maidstone, Kent.  Resided Islington, N.

25th December 1905, Islington, St John the Baptist, Francis Charles Shillibeer, age 22, bachelor, carman, 28 Orchard Street, father John Shillibeer, paper hanger married  Sarah Adams, spinster, age 18, 12 Dorset Street, father James Adams, labourer.


1911 Census - 50 Orchard Street, Essex Road, Islington, London, N - Frank Clarke, head, age 27, married, carman, packing case makers, born Deptford, Kent; Sarah Clarke, wife, age 24, married 5 years, 3 children, all still alive, born Islington, Middlesex; Sarah Clarke, daughter, age 5, born Islington, Middlesex; James Clarke, son, age 3, born Islington, Middlesex; Frank Clarke, son, age 1, born Islington, Middlesex.


Previously served in 5th Battalion, Territorial Reserve, Royal West Kent Regiment.

23rd August 1914, posted BEF.

Originally buried in a French communal cemetery at Verquignel, moved in 1933 to  Quatre-Vents Military Cemetery, III.C.5., Estree-Cauchy,  Pas de Calais, France.

NOTE: Regimental History & Soldiers Died in the Great War show Service No. as L/6518, CWGC website show it as L/6568, Medal Card, 6618.

Shown on the 1911 Census as Frank CLARKE, 50 Orchard Street, Essex Road, Islington, London N with his wife Sarah, and children, Sarah (5), James (3) & Frank (1),  served under that name, although his real name was Francis Charles SHILLIBEER.
