Born Lewisham, SE. son of Caroline Hurrell.

Previously served 5 days Army Ordnance Corps, not finally approved, character good.

Enlisted Lewisham, SE, age 26 years & 21 days, height 5ft 4½ inches, weight 150lbs, scar left side of abdomen. Resided 35 Devonshire Road, Forest Hill, London, SE. Formerly sheet metal worker.

1st November 1915, enlisted & posted 11th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 10th January 1916, Witley, overstaying his leave until reporting himself at Reveille on 12th January 1916, admonished, forfeits 3 days pay; 1st February 1916 to15th February 1916, Military Hospital, Lewisham, tonsillitis; 15th February 1916, Aldershot, being absent from time of discharge from hospital until reporting himself at 9.00pm 16th February 1916, admonished, forfeits 1 days pay; 13th March 1916 to 19th March 1916, Connaught, Aldershot, rheumatism; 2nd May 1916,  posted BEF, Southampton, embarked; 3rd May 1916, Havre, disembarked; 22nd May 1916, In the Field, improperly dressed on 6.30am Parade, 7 days confined to Barracks; 12th July 1916, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal; 28th July 1916, appointed paid Lance Corporal; 2nd August 1916, 139 Field Ambulance, scabies; 3rd August 1916, 50 N Casualty Clearing Station, scabies; 6th August 1916, 139 Field Ambulance, to Duty; 15th September 1916, posted missing.


15th June 1920, Statement of Relatives - completed by Caroline Hurrell, mother, 51 Toothill Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire - Father, Charles Hurrell, 51 Toothill Road, Loughborough; Caroline Hurrell, mother, 51 Toothill Road, Loughborough, (this address has been crossed through by A N Other?) and "not living with his wife has been inserted; Brothers - none; Sisters - Elsie Hurrell, age 29, 51 Toothill Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire; Ethel Hurrell, age 28, 51 Toothill Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire; Viola? Hurrell, age 19, 51 Toothill Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire; Dolly (this name has been crossed through by A N Other) and Miriam inserted, age 26, at present in Leicestershire Infirmary; Grandparents, William Henry Price?, 19 West Lane, Bermondsey; Uncles/Aunts, Charles Price?, age 45, 19 West Lane, Bermondsey.

19th July 1920, (letter from Mrs C Hurrell, to Infantry Records, undated but date stamped) - "Your letter to hand. I am writing concerning the letter I received from the War Office asking for my husbands address. That I could not give you as I do not know it. The letter was sent to where he is employed, but have received no reply. have written once since. Father and ??? were not on speaking terms and my husband is not living at home now. I think it would be my sons wish that I should have it. his memorial. Should have written before but have been waiting a reply to my letter."

19th July 1920, (letter from Mr C E Hurrell, to Infantry Records) - "In reply to yours of 5th inst. ref RWK 3157/84 my address (permanent) is C E Hurrell, c/o Bruile? Electrical Engineering Co.Ltd, Falcon Works, Loughborough, Leicestershire. I am shifting about so much that I have no private address for any length of time. Am sorry for the delay in replying but have been away from business the last two weeks."


Buried at Longueval Road Cemetery, E. 14., France.
