Lance Corporal Claudian Alfred BEWSHEA, G/10069, 1st  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, France and Flanders, 4th October 1917.

Born Beckenham, Kent, son of Frances & George Bewshea, 101 Edward Road, Penge.


1911 Census - 101 Edward Road, Penge, London, SE - George Bewshea, head, age 60, married, corrector of the press, printing, born Bethnal Green, London; Frances Bewshea, wife, age 49, married 22 years, 4 children, 2 still alive, born Woolwich, Kent; Claudian Bewshea, son, age 20, single, correspondence clerk, born Beckenham, Kent; Percy Bewshea, son, age 13, school, born Beckenham, Kent.


3rd January 1914, Holy Trinity, Beckenham, Kent, married Alice Ellen Curtis. 

Child - Patricia Alice Frances Bewshea born 3rd February 1916, Bromley, Kent.

Enlisted  Anerley, Surrey, age 25, height 5ft 5½ inches, mole left side of neck.  Resided 28 Lucas Road, Penge, Surrey. Formerly interpreter & secretary.

10th December 1915, enlisted; 19th October 1916, embarked / disembarked; 5th November 1916, joined Battalion, "D" Company; 10th March 1917, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal; 16th May 1917, appointed paid Lance Corporal.

6th March 1918, personal effects etc despatched to Mrs Alice Bewshea, 8 Mosslea Road, Penge, SE.

11th March 1918, letter from George Bewshea, of 101 Edward Road, Penge - "The articles mentioned on the enclosed form were brought to me by the landlady where Mrs A Bewshea, (my late son's widow), last lodged. My daughter in law is now on her way to Australia to join her parents having no relatives in England; but I will forward the articles to her as soon as it is safe to do so. If anything more is forthcoming (my son wore a gold band ring and carried a pocket book), will you be good enough to send to the above address and oblige."

 Medals, plaque, scroll and personal effects to be sent to Mrs A E Bewshea, c/o Mrs Curtis, Victoria Street, Stanton Hill, Townsville, North Queensland, Australia.

Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 106 to 108, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
