Corporal Matthew GOBLE, L/10060, 1st Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment,  killed in action, Flanders France,  death presumed, 22nd July 1916, age 24. 

Born Brighton, Sussex, son of Edward and Mary Ann Goble, of 59, Wolseley Road, Portslade, Brighton, Sussex.

14th October 1911 to 13th February 1912, Pte M Goble, Service No.1509 a Special Reservist , 3rd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, has been doing duty at the Barracks Chichester during this period and has character has been good. 18th January 1912, 3rd Class Certificate of Education. 1st May 1912, purchased discharge after 201 days. On discharge, age 19 years & 8 months, height 5ft 2¾ inches, blue eyes, light brown hair, several small scar left knee.


Enlisted Brighton, Sussex, age 20 years & 5 months, height 5ft 2¾ inches, weight 111lbs.  Resided Portslade, Sussex. Formerly brickmaker.

Home 27th January 1913 to 13th August 1914; BEF 14th August 1914 to 25th April 1915; Home 26th April 1915 to 7th July 1915; BEF 8th July 1915 to 22nd July 1916.

27th January 1913, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 19th February 1914, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal, 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 3rd April 1914, 2nd Class Certificate of Education; 13th April 1914, appointed paid Lance Corporal; 22nd May 1914, passed exam for promotion to Corporal; 24th August 1914, promoted Corporal; 22nd November 1914, appointed Acting Sergeant; 23rd April1915, wounded, gun shot wound, right hand; 2nd September 1915, reduced to Corporal; 22nd July 1916, posted missing.

Buried at  Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, IX. H. 3., Longueval, France.
