Captain Walter Urquhart ROSS, "B" Company, 8th Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of wounds, (received two days earlier, when a shell hit the dugout serving as "B" Company HQ), 22nd February 1916, age 32.

24th September 1885/6, born son of Walter & Fortune Ross.

Educated at Forest Hill Middle School & St Dunstan's College, Catford from 1895 to 1902. Captained the rugby team, and later, with others, formed the Old Dunstonian Rugby Football Club of which he was secretary until the outbreak of war. After the war one of the College Houses was named after him.

27th June 1910, Gt Ilford, St Clement, Essex, Walter Urquhart Ross, age 25, father Walter Ross married Cecilia Churchouse, of "Overstrand," 27, Quernmore Road, Bromley, Kent.

1911 Census - 11 Levendale Road, Forest Hill, Catford SE - Walter Urquhart Ross, head, age 25, married, Insurance Clerk, Lloyds Broker, worker, born Lewisham, London; Cecilia Ross, wife, age 33, married under 1 year, no children, born Walthamstow, London.

November 1914, joined 1/8 Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders as a Private, Service No.2397; 1st May 1915, posted BEF; 3rd October 1915, Commissioned into Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st December 1915, promoted Captain.

12th May 1916, Probate - Walter Urquhart Ross of 7 College Road, Bromley, Kent died 22nd February 1916 in Flanders from wounds received in action. Probate London 12th May to Alfred William Churchouse, dry fruit broker. Effects £402 18s 4d.

Buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, II. A. 38., Belgium & commemorated at St Dunstan's College War Memorial.

The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment - Temporary Second Lieutenant Walter U. Ross (since died of wounds received in action) to be temporary Captain. Dated 27th September, 1915.

Royal West Kent Regiment - The promotion to the temporary, rank of Captain of temporary 2nd Lieutenant W. U. Ross (now deceased) bears date 1 December 1915, and not as in Gazette of 10 March 1916.
