Captain Charley Gordon ECCLES, 41st Squadron,  Royal Flying Corps, (formerly Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment), killed in action, (was flying FE 8 A4881 of No 41 Sqn RFC on an Offensive Patrol when he was shot down by anti-aircraft fire), 25th May 1917, age 29.

19th April 1888, born in  Darwen, Lancashire, son of Captain  Richard Herbert Eccles (Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment) and Jane Marshall Eccles, (nee Gray), of Dingleton, Melrose, Roxburghshire. 

24th May 1888, St Cuthbert, Darwen, Lancashire, baptism of Charley Gordon Eccles, son of Richard Herbert, (cotton spinner & manufacturer), & Jane Marshall Eccles, Lynwood.

19th December 1914, (arrival date), London, S.S. Atsuta Maru, Charlie Gordon Eccles, age 26, planter, embarked Penang, resided Malay States.

5th October 1915, posted BEF.

24th December 1917, Probate - Eccles Charley Gordon, of Chesham Bentham Yorkshire. Captain in the general list & RFC died 25th May 1917 in France. Administration London 24th December to Richard Herbert Eccles, Captain in the Royal West Kent Regiment. Effects £221 16s 8d.

Buried at Messines Ridge British Cemetery, II. F. 20, Mesen, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
