Acting Sergeant Frederic Leslie HOGBEN, 18440, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment.

Enlisted 5th September 1914, age 21, height 5ft 9 inches, resided Linden House, Ash, Canterbury, Kent. Formerly farmer / auctioneer.

Home 5th September 1914 to 20th September 1916; BEF, 21st September 1916 to 30th March 1919; Home, 31st March 1919 to 4th May 1919.

5th September 1914, enlisted & posted Royal East Kent Mounted Rifles, 1858; 22nd September 1914, posted 2/1st Royal East Kent Mounted Rifles; 19th April 1915 to 29th April 1915, in Hospital, German measles, slight; 21st September 1916, Infantry Base Depot, France; 11th October 1916, transferred to 11th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 30th July 1918, appointed unpaid Acting Lance Corporal; 21st September 1918, posted Corporal, 10th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 22nd January 1919, appointed paid Acting Sergeant.

30th March 1919, Volber Cologne, Germany, (attached 23rd Middlesex) - statement as to disability - served in France, Belgium & Italy, heart trouble & rheumatism, started 2nd September 1915, after sleeping in the open for 10 days in wet weather. Acute rheumatic fever contracted in 1915 caused disability for 4 months & after that he had to be employed on light duty. From the history I gather that this man was never really fit for an infantry's mans work after this & he only served as much for 2 months. He complains of shortness of breath & occasional rheumatic pains. Heart sounds good. Heart slightly enlarged. Pulse rate 96 rising to 125 on exertion, Recovery good. Possibility of recurrence of rheumatic fever.

4th May 1919, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to sickness. Silver War Badge issued 

Pension 5/6 a week for 52 weeks conditional. Disability, rheumatism attributable 20%, expires 4th May 1920. 10th March 1920, no disability, gratuity £5.
