Second Lieutenant Herbert Golden DIX, 7th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent  Regiment, (Pte 18 Royal Fusiliers, Service No.6763), killed in action, 14th February 1917, age 23.

30th August 1893, born  in West Ham, son of William Charles and Mary Lois Dix, of 25, Ethelbert Gardens, Eastern Avenue, Ilford, Essex. 

18th January 1909 to 20th July 1910, Strand School, previously educated at Coopers Company School, (secondary). Left for junior clerkship with Dunn & Co.


1911 Census - Pavenham, 44 Belgrave Road, Wanstead, Essex, NE - William Charles Dix, head, age 52, married, Assistant Superintendant, Post Office, London, Easter District, born Islington, London; Mary Lois Dix, wife, age 52, married 28 years, 5 children, 4 still alive, born Paddington, London; Edith Dorothy Dix, daughter, age 22, single, clerk - shorthand & typist, cold storage company, born Upton, Essex; Herbert Golden, Dix, son, age 17, single, clerk, South African Merchants, born Wanstead Slip, Essex.


14th November 1915, posted BEF.

Buried at Regina Trench Cemetery, VI. D. 8., Grandcourt, Somme, France.

His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to confer the Military Cross on the under mentioned Officers and Warrant Officers in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field :

Temporary 2nd Lieutenant Herbert Golden Dix,  Royal West Kent  Regiment

For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led a flank attack on the enemy with great courage and determination. Later, with another officer, he carried out a daring patrol. He set a splendid example throughout.
