Serjeant Anthony Edward CHEDZOY,  G/18901, 6th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, killed in action, near Arras, Flanders France, 17th July  1917.

19th November 1891, born  Marylebone, London, son of the  Joseph Chedzoy and his wife Eliza Ann, (daughter of Henry Pearce), of 105 Bath Road, Bridgewater, Somerset.

3rd January 1892, Bryanston Square, St Mary, Westminster, baptism of Anthony Edward Chedzoy, son of Joseph, (butler?) & Eliza Ann Chedzoy, of 9? Gt. Quebec Street?.

Educated St Mary's School, Bryanston Square, London. W.

Enlisted Shoreham on Sea, Sussex, age 23 years & 354 days, height 5ft 7 inches, weight 134?lbs.  Resided 105 Bath Road, Bridgewater, Somerset. Formerly clerk.

Home 9th November 1915 to 10th October 1916; BEF 11th October 1916 to 17th July 1917.

9th November 1915, enlisted & posted 9th Battalion, The Buffs, Service No.8569; 29th December 1915, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal; 28th March 1916, appointed paid Lance Corporal; 15th June 1916, Dover, neglect of duty, reprimanded; 5th July 1916, promoted Corporal; 18th August 1916, appointed paid Lance Sergeant; 31st August 1916, appointed paid Acting Sergeant; 10th October 1916, posted BEF & embarked / disembarked; 11th October 1916, 38 Infantry Base Depot; 11th October 1916, posted 1st Battalion, The Buffs; 11th October 1916, promoted Sergeant; 20th October 1916, transferred to Royal West Kent Regiment & posted 6th Battalion; 23rd October 1916, joined Battalion, In the Field; 9th April 1917, wounded in action near Arras, gun shot wound, back; 22nd April 1917, 40 Infantry base Depot, Etaples, ex 22 General Hospital; 8th May 1917, rejoined Battalion, "B" Company.

His Commanding Officer wrote: "He was my platoon Sergeant and one of the best men I ever struck. Always helpful and cheerful, he fought and died for his country and did you real honour. Surely his death is just the crowning glory of a noble life."

Commemorated at Arras Memorial, Bay 7, Pas de Calais, France.

NOTE: Regimental History & CWGC website show name as CHEDZOY; Soldiers Died in the Great War show it as CHEDYOY.
