Born Ashurst Wood, East Grinstead, Sussex, son of Alfred & Eliza Baldwin, The Vale, Ashurst Wood, Sussex. Older sister Clara Baldwin, The Vale, Ashurst Wood, Sussex. Older brothers, Walter Baldwin, Summerhill, Tonbridge & Alfred Baldwin, 63 Battery, Royal Field Artillery.

Previously served in 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, Service No.8276, Enlisted 17th March 1911, age 18, height 5ft 4 inches, weight 116lbs.11th April 1911, awarded 3rd Class Certificate of Education. 21st July 1911, awarded 2nd Class Certificate of Education. 19th May 1911 to 26th May 1911, Maidstone Hospital, sore throat.

Enlisted Maidstone, Kent, age 18, height 5ft 4 inches, weight 120lbs, three small moles, outer side upper left arm. Formerly general labourer.
