Born Beckenham, Bromley, Kent, enlisted 2nd September 1914, Bromley, Kent, age 19, height 5ft 7 inches, weight 140lbs. Formerly greengrocer.

Son of Phillip Bates, 4 Churchfields Road, Beckenham, Bromley, Kent.

Home, 2nd September 1914 to 31st May 1915; BEF, 1st June 1915 to 19th March 1916; Home, 20th March 1916 to 3rd August 1916.

4th September 1914, posted 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 12th February 1915 to 17th February 1915, absent; 3rd April 1915, Aldershot, absent from Tattoo till 7.45pm 7th inst, when on active service, 10 days confined to Barracks, deprived of 5 days pay, forfeits 5 days pay; 24th April 1915, Aldershot, absent from Tattoo till 7.00pm 29th inst, when on active service, 14 days confined to Barracks, deprived 6 days pay, forfeits 6 days pay; 1st May 1915 to 6th May 1915, absent; 7th May 1915, Broadmoor, Bolton, inattention in the ranks, when on active service, 5 days confined to Barracks; 27th May 1915, Aldershot, absenting himself from Parade at 7.00am when on active service, 8 days confined to Barracks, deprived 2 days pay; 13th January 1916, letter from mother Mrs P Bates, saying son enlisted when only sixteen and has been in France for 8 to 9 months and would like to have him home for a short time knowing he is under age to be at the Front; 19th January 1916, War Office asking for birth certificate; 10th March 1916, wounded, shell wound shoulder; 20th March 1916, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment.

3rd August 1916, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to wounds.  Silver War Badge issued
