Private  Joseph CHAPMAN, L/9857,  2nd  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died, Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force, 2nd September 1916, age 25.

Born 30th November 1891, Thame, Oxfordshire, son of David and Annie Jane Chapman, of Church End, Haddenham, Buckinghamshire. One brother, three sisters.

Previously served in 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Territorials, Service No.872. Enlisted 10th February 1909, Maidenhead, age 17 years & 2 months, height 5ft 4 inches, apprentice electrician. 13th April 1912, discharged having joined Regular Army.

Enlisted Hounslow, Middlesex, age 20 years & 5 months, height 5ft 4 inches, weight 126lbs, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, light brown hair.  Resided Haddenham, Buckinghamshire. Formerly electrician.

14th April 1912, enlisted & posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 5th July 1912, awarded 3rd Class Certificate of Education; 23rd July 1912, posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 24th March 1913 to 28th March 1913, King George V Hospital, Dublin, sore throat; 22nd April 1913, passed class of Instruction, Telephone Operator; 2nd September 1913 to 15th September 1913, King George V Hospital, Dublin, Myalgia; 7th March 1914, improper conduct on Parade, laughing at another man being made a soldier ????, 5 days confined to Barracks; 3rd April 1914 to 17th April 1914, Multan, fractured radius, right, simple fracture; 12th September 1914, absent from Parade, 5 days confined to Barracks

29th April 1916 - Captured at Kut al Amara. Death unofficially reported by Pte C Chapman, 7970, Norfolk Regiment, on postcard dated 3rd June 1917. Date of death to be recorded as between 29th April 1916 and 3rd June 1917. Death certificate later received from the Ottoman Red Crescent Society. Died 2nd September 1916 of Malaria, buried by his comrades in Grave Ref 138 in cemetery near Yarbachi Hospital.

Buried at  Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, XXI. R. 33., Iraq.
