Private Herbert Stephen LANE, L/9239, 2nd  Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died, Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force, 19th July 1916. 

Born West Ham, Essex, enlisted 12th January 1909, Maidstone, Kent, age 21, height 5ft 5 inches, weight 134lbs, resided Custom House, London, E.  Formerly general labourer.

Son of William John & Mary Lane, 71 Mortlake Road, Custom House, East London.

Previously served in Special Reserve, 7704, from 10th July 1908 to 10th January 1909. Born Plaistow, Canning Town, London, enlisted Woolwich, Kent, age 21, height 5ft 5 inches, weight 123lbs, formerly greengrocer.

Postings - Home, 12th January 1909 to 28th September 1909; India, 29th September 1909 to 31st January 1915; Indian Expeditionary Force, 1st February 1915 to 19th July 1916.

24th July 1915, severely wounded in action at Nasirayah; 29th July 1915, admitted to Hospital, Basra; 28th August 1915, discharged from hospital; 29th April 1916, reported Prisoner of War, captured at Kut-al Amara; 19th July 1916, reported died in Hospital at Aleppo, Chronic Enteritis, while a Prisoner of War.

Commemorated at Basra Memorial,   Panel 29, Iraq.
