Private Horace Homer FLOOD, S/737, "C" Company,  8th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died when a Prisoner of War from wounds at Festubert, Germany, 5th October 1915, age 47. 

Born St Lukes, London, Middlesex, son of Joseph Reuben & Jane Louisa Flood.

5th February 1894, St Pancras Register Office, married Mary Martha Brignell, spinster, of 23 Derby Buildings, Britannia Street, Kings Cross, London.

Children - Jane Mabel Flood, born 25th March 1890, St Pancras, London; Eliza Hannah Flood, born 14th March 1892, St Pancras, London; Ellen Mary Flood, born 14th April 1894, St Pancras, London; Madeline Flood, born 28th April 1896, St Pancras, London.

Previously served 4 years with 17th Middlesex, discharged at end of term of engagement, 1898?

Enlisted  9th September 1914, Finsbury Barracks, EC, age 34 years & 10 months, height 5ft 7 inches, 135lbs, complexion sallow, brown eyes, brown hair, mole centre of back, birthmark right thigh, teeth deficient, is somewhat bandy legged but it does not interfere with his movement.  Resided 49 Clerkenwell Green, Clerkenwell, EC. Formerly carpenter.

9th September 1914, enlisted; 12th September 1914, posted 8th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 7th July 1915, absent from Tattoo until 5th July, 8 days confined to Barracks, forfeits 4 dya pay; 30th August 1915, posted BEF.

Wounded, gun shot wound to the brain. Prisoner of War

8th May 1916, pension of 15/- a week awarded to widow.

Buried at  Cologne Southern Cemetery, XI. F. 20, Koln(Cologne), Nordrhein-Westfal, Germany.


NOTE: 31st January 1938 letter from Mr D E Snider, 3465 Rhoda Avenue, Oakland, California, USA - "On advice of the British Consulate General at San Francisco, I am writing to you in the interest of my mother, Lucretia Eliza Flood. She is seeking information in regards to her family. About the only information that she has to go on is the fact that her brother, Horace Flood, who was killed in the World War was a member of the 8th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, his number was 737. He was survived by his wife, and it is possible that she may be receiving a pension. Hoping that you may be able to give me some information on the above."

7th February 1938, widows address given as 127 Denby Buildings, Wicklow Street, London, WC1; 16th February 1938, this information provided to the Records Office by the Pensions Office in confidence;

2nd March 1938, letter from Records Office to Mr D E Snider, 3465 Rhoda Avenue, Oakland, California, USA " With reference to your letter of 31st January, I am directed to inform you that the Department has a record of a No.737, Private Horace Flood, Royal West Kent Regiment, who died on 5th October 1915, while a Prisoner of War in Germany, and who might be identical with the soldier to whom you refer. It is contrary to the general practice of the Department to furnish addresses of relatives of deceased soldiers, but a letter would be forwarded to the last known address of the next of kin of the above named soldier, if enclosed in a stamped envelope bearing reference number Houns./737/1830 (R.Records. A) and sent care of the Under Secretary of State, The War Office, Records Section, Arnside Street, Walworth, London, SE17."
