Private George GILL, 241360, 1st Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment,  killed in action, East of Ypres on the Menin Road, Flanders France,  4th October 1917, age 29.  

6th October 1887, born Newton Abbott, Devon, son of the late Samuel Gill, (RN), and Elizabeth Gill, (daughter of Joshua Alner Wheeler), of Rose Hill, Kingskerswell, Newton Abbott, Devon.

8th August 1910, Kingskerswell, Newton Abbott, Devon, married Maud Louisa Allstaff, of Prospect Cottage, School Road, Kingskerswell, Newton Abbott, Devon / Fore St., Kingskerswell, Devon. 


1911 Census - Daccabridge Road, Kingskerswell, Newton Abbott, Devon - George Gill , head, age 24, married, carter, market garden, worker, born Newton Abbot; Maud Gill, wife, age 27, married under 1 year, no children, born Kingskerswell.


Child - Donald George Gill, born 19th October 1915.

29th May 1916, enlisted Newton Abbott, Devon.  Resided S. Brent, Devon. Formerly groom/gardener.

Served with the Expeditionary Force in France from 12th September 1917.

An Officer wrote: "He was in every way a soldier, and respected by officers and comrades, by whom he is very sadly missed."

Buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, IV. J. 16., Belgium.
