1886, born Elmstead, Kent, son of James and Elizabeth Bates.

6th June 1910, Wesleyan Chapel, Snargate Street, Dover, Kent, married, Amelia Page, spinster.

Enlisted  Dover, Kent, age 30, height 5ft 5 inches, weight 112lbs.  Resided 69, Longfield Road, Dover, Kent. Formerly pastry cook, bakery.

Home 11th December 1915 to 5th January 1917; BEF, 6th January 1917 to 3rd October 1917.

11th December 1915, enlisted; 12th December 1915, to Army Reserve; 17th May 1916, mobilized; 18th May 1916, posted 3rd Home Counties (CP), 2352, Brigade RFA 36/81; 24th June 1916, transferred to 9th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st September 1916, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 6th January 1917, posted BEF; 7th January 1917, embarked / disembarked; 9th January 1917, joined Battalion; 3rd October 1917, posted missing.

6th March 1918, Pension of 18/9 a week to be paid to widow and one child.
