Born St Leonards, Sussex, son of George Plane Clarke and Martha Clarke, of St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex / 5 Maze Hill Terrace, St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex / 10 Burry Terrace, Silverhill,  St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex.

Enlisted Chichester, Sussex, age 20 years & 10 months, height 5ft 2¼ inches, weight 116lbs. Resided 14 Newgate Road, St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex. Formerly milk deliverer.

Home 14th April 1916 to 12th September 1916; BEF 13th September 1916 to 30th March 1918.

14th April 1916, called up for Service; 16th April 1916, posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st September 1916, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 13th September 1916, posted BEF; 13th September 1916, embarked; 19th September 1916, posted 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 29th September 1916, joined Battalion; 1st October 1917, attached New Zealand Company; 24th October 1917, rejoined Battalion; 12th November 1917 to 26th November 1917, leave to England; 28th March 1918, 38 Field Ambulance, wounded in action, gun shot wounds, head & chest.

4th September 1919, Statement of Relatives - Father, George Plane Clarke, 10 Burry Terrace, Silverhill ; Mother, Martha Clarke; Brother - killed.

Buried at  Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1., V.C.4., Somme, France.
