Private Charles CURTIS, G/10595, 11th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, died of cardiac failure, (contracted nephritis while on active service), at 4th Scottish General Hospital, Stobhill, Glasgow, 1st July 1917, age 37.

Born, 16th October 1879, Islington, London, N, son of Charles Curtis and Emily Curtis, (daughter of Benjamin William Hazell), Colham Green near Uxbridge, Middlesex..

20th October 1907, St Judes, Bethnal Green, Charles Curtis, age 28, bachelor, labourer, of 333 Cambridge Road, father Charles Curtis, labourer, married Ada Cann, age 25, spinster, (daughter of the late Joseph Cann, publican),  of 95, Mangrove Village, Luton, Bedfordshire. Born at Hillingdon, Uxbridge. 

Children - Ada Curtis, born 26th January 1909, Lewisham; Dorothy Curtis, born 30th August 1914, Lewisham.

1911 Census - 45 Ladywell Road, Lewisham, SE - Charles Curtis, head, age 31, general labourer, born Hillingdon, Middlesex; Ada Curtis, wife, age 29, married 3 years, 1 child, still alive, born Chertsey, Surrey; Ada Curtis, daughter, age 2, born Lewisham, London.

Enlisted  Lewisham, SE, age *36 years & 16 days, height 5ft 6½ inches, weight 148lbs, scar left elbow.  Resided 45 Ladywell Road, Lewisham, SE. Formerly arsenal labourer.

*some enlistment papers show age as 22 years & 233 days.

1st November 1915, enlisted & posted 11th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st May 1916, posted BEF; 2nd May 1916, Southampton, embarked; 3rd May 1916. Havre, disembarked; 28th May 1917, 14 General Hospital, Wimereux, albuminium; 30th May 1917, transferred to England, Hospital Ship, St Denis; 31st May 1917, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 31st May 1917 to 1st July 1917, 4th Scottish General Hospital, Stobhill, Glasgow, acute nephritis.

7th January 1918, pension of 22/11 a week awarded to widow & two children.

Buried in Heroes Corner, Ladywell Cemetery; Commemorated at Lewisham (Ladywell) Cemetery, Screen Wall. D. 3183, London.
