Private Alfred Thomas CANNING, 9088, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment.

Born 17th January 1894, enlisted 20th July 1915, East Ham, age 21, height 5ft 5 inches, resided 65 High Street, North Woolwich, Essex /  7 Lloyd Villas, Roman Road, East Ham, Essex / 14 Fabian Street,  Roman Road, East Ham, Essex. Formerly cable hand / coal trimmer.

Son of William Canning, 7 Lloyd Villas, Roman Road, East Ham, Essex.

Home, 20th July 1915 to 22nd December 1915; BEF, 23rd December 1915 to 25th October 1918; Home, 26th October 1918 to 29th April 1919.

20th July 1915, enlisted and posted Depot; 24th July 1915, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 23rd December 1915, posted 8th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 5th April 1916, Field General Court Martial, when a soldier acting as a sentinel, whilst on Active Service,  fell asleep on  his post, found guilty and  sentenced to death; 14th April 1916, sentence commuted  by General Office Commanding  to 5 years penal servitude and suspended; 7th November 1917, mentioned in dispatches; 9th October 1918, wounded; 26th October 1918, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 17th April 1919, Special Military Surgical Hospital, Shepherds Bush.

29th April 1919, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to wounds. Silver War Badge issued

Debility 40%, gun shot wounds, left ankle & right knee.

Pension 11/- a week from 30th April 1919, to be reviewed in 52 weeks.
