Born Whatlington, Sussex, enlisted 9th December 1914, Hastings, Sussex, age 16, height 5ft 9 inches, weight 10st 4lbs, resided Laural Bank, Cripps Corner, Staplecross, Sussex. Formerly school boy / farm labourer.

9th December 1914, enlisted 13th Royal Sussex Regiment, 2911; 1st September 1916, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, arrived at Front underage; 12th September 1916, transferred back to England, underage; 21st October 1916, posted 102nd Training Reserve Battalion, TR10/ 54704; 27th February 1917, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal; 31st December 1917 to 23rd February 1918, Lance Corporal, attended Course of Instruction at the Aldershot Command School of Instruction for NCOs Bordon, awarded certificate dated 23rd February 1918, "fair and fit for rank of Lance Corporal; 30th March 1918, reverts to Private; 6th April 1918, posted BEF & transferred to 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, 31036; 21st June 1918, drunk in camp, deprived 14 days pay; 28th June 1918, 54 Casualty Clearing Station, wounded, gun shot wound left leg; 29th June 1918, 83 General Hospital, Boulogne; 14th July 1918, transferred to UK AT St Andrew; 15th July 1918, Weymouth Military Hospital.

Medical Board - debility following pneumonia, date and place of origin of disability, 9th December 1918, Sidney Hall Hospital. When patient was in the Sidney Hall Hospital for gun shot wound left leg he contracted pneumonia with some pleuristic effusion. Patients complains of shortness of breath, there is impaired resonance over base of right lung together with deficient entry of air.

12th April 1919, discharged as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to wounds. Silver War Badge issued
